FetchFly.AI: Intralogistics with flying robots
The FetchFly.AI collaborative project, funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Union, marks another milestone in our commitment to innovative and sustainable logistics solutions. As w3logistics AG, we are contributing our many years of experience in digital warehouse management to a pioneering research project on autonomous material handling using flying robots.
The aim of FetchFly.AI is to develop self-learning, autonomous flying robot systems that use artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning to dynamically optimise transport routes within production environments. In combination with a central, AI-supported control and order management system, these flying robots enable flexible, safe and efficient intralogistics – particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. The direct connection of this innovative (flying) transport system to the w3/max warehouse management system, and thus its integration into existing customer processes, demonstrates the practical suitability and outstanding performance of the overall solution.
The collaboration between research partners Ruhr University Bochum, w3logistics AG and Multikopter.de brings together outstanding expertise in the fields of artificial intelligence, production systems, logistics software and aerial robotics. Development proceeds in stages – from simulations through hardware integration to realistic validation in the learning and research factory. Practical testing is carried out using a complex terminal block assembly.
For over 25 years, w3logistics has successfully participated in numerous national and international research projects. This ongoing research work is a central component of our technological development and enables us to translate innovative approaches into market-ready software solutions at an early stage. Users of our WMS w3/max benefit directly from the expertise we have built up in numerous research projects. The combination of many years of market experience and forward-looking research enables us to continuously develop our software in line with the latest trends.
The project will run from January 2026 to December 2028 and lays the foundation for flexible, intelligent and future-proof intralogistics.
